A Mother’s Strength in the Face of Cancer

A Mother’s Strength in the Face of Cancer
When Sarah Whitney was 31 and halfway through her pregnancy, she heard the words no mother expects — stage 3 breast cancer. Even as she faced surgery and chemotherapy, her greatest fear wasn’t for herself — it was for her baby.

In April, her son Kal-El came into the world strong and healthy. In one powerful moment, captured by photographer Kate Murray, Sarah nursed her newborn with her remaining breast — a symbol of courage, love, and unbreakable bond.
She could only breastfeed for two weeks before beginning stronger treatments. “Every bottle I prepare reminds me of what I lost,” she says softly. Yet, thanks to 27 generous women who donated milk, Kal-El continues to thrive.

Today, Sarah is still fighting — but she’s also living: cheering for her kids, laughing at the little moments, and holding on to gratitude.
Because in that quiet hospital room, when her baby latched for the first time, she showed the world what real motherhood looks like — love stronger than fear, hope louder than pain.
