a thin, desperate cry

Samuel was seconds from crushing another load of trash when a sound stopped him — a thin, desperate cry.
He climbed the truck, expecting an animal… but inside a torn duffel bag was a newborn, cold and fading.
Samuel pulled the baby to his chest: “You’re okay… I’ve got you.”

One second later, the child would’ve been gone.
Paramedics called it heroism — but Samuel said only this: “He cried. We listened.”
That morning, a baby was thrown away.

But Samuel refused to let the story end there.
